The Diesel Vintage Series cigar follows in the footsteps of its predecessors for being a bold smoke that pushes the boundaries of what a cigar can be. It is a collaboration between Justin Andrews of Scandinavian Tobacco Group (STG) and acclaimed cigar crafter AJ Fernandez. AJ has been developing blends for the Diesel brand since its inception in 2009. The cigar uses aged filler leaves from Jalapa, Nicaragua and a Habano binder from Esteli, Nicaragua capped off with a savory Mexican San Andres maduro wrapper. The tobacco for the binder and filler were grown on farms owned by Fernandez. The cigar was crafted with the intent to give aficionados a full experience of what vintage tobacco is all about.

Most cigars are manufactured in the Caribbean and Central America.
Despite many decades of war and revolution in this Central American country, the cigar industry has thrived due to the hard work and tenacity of Cuban exiles to the land such as Plasencia, Padron, Oliva, Ortez, and others. Tobacco has been a force of social stability, and the country is now one of the principal exporters of premium cigars in the world.

Cigar wrapper color varies from green (Double Claro or Candela) to black (Maduro or Oscuro) with a full range of browns in between.
Maduro wrapper can go from dark coffee brown with a reddish tint to blackish brown (the latter also called Oscuro).

Mexican San Andres Maduro
The wrapper is the last tobacco leaf to be rolled on the cigar, so it is the one the smoker will see.
Mexican tobacco is very dark and the best leaves can be used as maduro wrappers. San Andres Maduro is a thick, medium bodied dark leaf, also called San Andres Morron. Like Connecticut Broadleaf, San Andres Maduro is stalk cut and used for binder and wrapper.

Nicaraguan Esteli
The binder is a full tobacco leaf that is used to roll the cigar, binding the filler tobaccos together.
The Esteli region of Nicaragua is well-regarded for producing some of the finest tobacco in the world. Tobacco grown in this area is valued for its aroma, flavor, and strength.

The binder is a full tobacco leaf that is used to roll the cigar, binding the filler tobaccos together.

Jalapa
Filler is the term used to describe the tobacco inside a cigar or the "guts" of the cigar.

Cuban expatriate AJ Fernandez produces handmade cigars in Esteli, Nicaragua at the Tabacalera Fernandez factory. Fernandez learned everything he knows about tobacco and cigarmaking from his late grandfather, cigar legend Alejandro Robaina.

Very firm construction, open draw, even burn with no touchups needed. Medium to full bodied with nice toothiness and lots of thick dark gray smoke output and flavors of cedar, leather, black peppery spice with a touch of a bittersweet sourness/acidity.

This is a great vitola. A bols savory cigar with not much sweetness. Somehow it works for my palate. Definitely kept my attention and wasn't bland.

The Diesel Vintage Series Robusto is a collaboration between AJ Fernandez and STG's Justin Andrews. For a $7 cigar (For the robusto size that I am smoking) It really doesn't get any better than this. The construction was very sturdy with a dark chocolate toothy Mexican San Andreas wrapper, a personal favorite of mine! In your first 10 mins of this experience you will get pungent notes of black pepper and a little bit of cherry sweetness mixed with dark chocolate. About half way through I noticed the ash was very firm, sign of a beautifully constructed cigar. Nothing new if you are familiar with AJ Fernandez cigars. Throughout my 70-minute experience I was blown away that this cigar was only 7 dollars, full of flavors of cocoa, espresso, fruit and earth. This is the cigar you want to go out and buy a box of as it doesn't break the bank and provides you with a rich premium smoking experience. Definitely give this one a shot.
