JC Newman Cigars has been making premium cigars for more than a century. With headquarters in Ybor City, Florida, JC Newman Cigars has been dubbed “America’s Oldest Family-Owned Premium Cigar Maker.” Now entering its fourth-generation as a family run company, JC Newman has brought back the American cigar. First made in 1910, the American is made of 100% American tobacco from wrapper to filler, and it is hand rolled in Newman’s El Reloj factory located in Tampa, Florida. Think of it as an American puro. The American sports a Florida Sun grown wrapper that is draped over a Connecticut broadleaf binder, which houses USA Connecticut and USA Pennsylvania long-filler tobaccos. Production of cigars in the United States, once a thriving industry, is now mainly machine made cigars. They are still being produced in the last remaining cigar factory from the 1890s, the JC Newman Cigar factory in Tampa. However, in recent years boutique brands have flourished and are being handmade by select rollers in Miami, Florida.

As opposed to the Shade grown plants, sun grown tobacco plants grown thicker leaves with thicker veins and darker color. Sungrown wrappers can be appreciated for their rich taste and sweet undertones.

The binder is a full tobacco leaf that is used to roll the cigar, binding the filler tobaccos together.
Connecticut tobacco is golden brown with a mild to medium flavor. It is mainly grown under shade in the Connecticut River Valley or sun grown in Ecuador.
Broadleaf
The binder is a full tobacco leaf that is used to roll the cigar, binding the filler tobaccos together.
Broadleaf tobacco leaves are known for being large, resilient, thick, and sweetness. Ideally, they are used in the production of maduro cigars and primarily used as wrappers, but they add dimension to a cigar’s flavor profile when used as a binder.

I bought this one from Neptune 21 months ago so it's been in my humidor for some time. Pretty cool that it's an American puro. Great construction and perfect draw. Burned perfectly the entire way through. First third was nutty, creamy, light pepper with cocoa and barley undertones. Second half was predominately cocoa notes with toasted bread. I think it's a very good cigar but it didn't wow me, especially considering the price. Worth trying at least once.

This was my first time with the American cigar. It was everything I had hoped for and more! Before light up it had smells of cinnamon and honey. It had cool draw with little to no spice!! Lots of leather notes! It was so well constructed! It is currently at the top of my list of favorites. There was something very familiar and comforting about this cigar. I would highly recommend!!

This cigar is promoted as the first American puro but was that not George Rico's American Puro about ten years ago? This is a very nice looking cigar that burned well with no corrections or relights required. The draw is very light hence only four stars but the flavour is mellow and smooth and makes for an easy smoke but a tad overpriced I feel.

Before I try a new smoke, I read the reviews from other smokers. This has proven to be a very reliable method to smoke nothing but the finest. I came across JC Newman 'The American' and purchased them just for the 'novelty factor' of being 100 percent American. After my purchase I read some reviews that stated this cigar was sub-par!?! I received my cigars a month ago and placed them in my humidor. I broke one out to try last night and am extremely surprised by the quality of this stick! I believe that some of you other reviewers need to give this stick another chance. The burn was flawless, smoke was thick, and the flavor was overwhelmingly pleasant!

The wrapper of the American is smooth, very soft and silk-like, but not overly oily. Chocolate, charred oak, and leather predominate for the first 2/3s without much transition. Perfect draw. Thought it was a little too open but the construction was immaculate requiring no touch ups. Last third starts to reveal multiple layers of sweetness and spice becoming more rich and bold upfront with a retrohale of molasses. Despite being 100% American reminds me of Dominican coroja. Excellent overall, but worth the $16 per stick? If you love the story as much as the taste - then yes. Good for at least a 5 pack, and complimented well by a syrupy spirit or beer. I paired mine with a Lagunitas’ The Waldos Special Ale (12%). Some background from Half-Wheel: * Florida Sun Grown wrapper is grown at Corona Cigar Co. owner Jeff Borysiewicz’s tobacco farm in Clermont, Fla. * The binder—a Connecticut broadleaf varietal—comes from the Foster Farm in Windsor, Ct. * Filler tobaccos include Connecticut Havana-seed grown at Foster Farm as well as Pennsylvania tobacco grown on Amish farms. * The bands are being printed at Action Label in Sanford, Fla. * The ink used on the labels comes from North Carolina. * The boxes are being built at Millenium Wood Box in Miami. * The molds for the cigars were made by HSA Cigar Molds in Dade City, Fla. * The cigars are wrapped in cellophane purchased from Technical Packaging in Pennsylvania.

It was a pretty enjoyable experience. However, I think the Cigar band is an unfortunate part of the side design with draw Taste and Aroma never lag behind Cuban Cigar. This is a cigar comparable to Cuban cigar montecristo no.2.
