The Kafie 1901 Serie L Natural was developed to celebrate Dr. Gaby Kafie’s 50th birthday. In fact, the “L” in the cigar’s name is the Roman Numeral for the number 50. Gaby is the founder of Kafie 1901 Cigars. To create the blend, Kafie collaborated with La Aurora Cigars’ master blender Manuel Inoa. It took them three years to develop the blend, which consists of all Dominican tobacco and features a smooth, natural Corojo wrappers and long-filler leaves. The tobaccos used to create this masterful blend were grown on farms owned and operated by La Aurora. The Serie L Natural is a medium to full-bodied cigar that imparts a balanced and complex smoking experience, and it is indicative of the fine tobacco that is grown in the Dominican Republic.

The Dominican Republic is the world's first producer of cigars. Most factories are located in Santiago, in the center of the island, and in close proximity to the tobacco fields grown in the fertile Cibao Valley. While tobacco and cigars have always traditionally been produced in the Dominican Republic, many Cuban cigar makers established in the Dominican Republic after the Cuban communist revolution, elevating the quality of Dominican cigars.

The main tobacco region in the Dominican Republic is the Cibao valley in the northern part of the island. In the 60s, Cuban seeds were brought here by exiled Cuban cigar makers and found that they grew exceptional cigar tobacco, called Piloto Cubano. The native Dominican tobacco, called Olor, is milder than Piloto Cubano yet more aromatic. The first company to grow Dominican tobacco for cigar wrapper was Tabacalera Arturo Fuente in 1995.

Dominican Republic is a traditional tobacco-growing country. In the 60's, a Cuban seed was introduced and the resulting tobacco, called Piloto Cubano, became famous as a good substitute of the Cuban tobacco that was no longer allowed to enter the USA. Piloto Cubano is full bodied while the Dominican Olor tobacco is milder but more aromatic.

This is a new line for boutique-cigar maker Gaby Kafie, blended and rolled at the legendary La Aurora factory in Dominican Republic. The natural corojo wrapper is Dominican, making this stick an all-Dominican puro. From the moment that you light this cigar until the end, it is a sight to see: a beautiful medium brown color, great construction, with a uniform, nice gray/white ash. The cigar produces tons of smoke, and while there is no overpowering spice, there are notes of black pepper and cinnamon throughout which are very pleasant. Strength is a solid medium with the cigar becoming stronger in the last third, where cocoa, citrus, and cedar notes dominate. If you're looking for a delicious earthy smoke with just the right amount of spice, look no further. This line is a great introduction to the new era of Kafie cigars made with the collaboration of master blender Manuel Inoa from La Aurora, and in my book it is a success.
