When going up from the foot to the tip of a tobacco plant, leaves become darker, thicker and fuller. Therefore, to know the origin of the tobacco is not enough to guess how the cigar is going to taste. The stalk positions of the leaves are essential to the taste! One common method of harvesting tobacco is “priming”, where the leaves are removed from the plant as they mature. The higher the position of the leaf in the stalk, the more sun and nutrients it would have received. This leads to the higher primings having the strongest, richest tasting tobacco.
