The Hoyo La Amistad by AJ Fernandez is a full bodied revamp of the famous Hoyo de Monterrey brand. AJ Fernandez grew up near the Hoyo de Monterrey factory in Cuba and was excited when General Cigars chose him to blend this cigar. The cigar is a collaboration between the two companies, which is appropriate since "La Amistad" means friendship in Spanish. The cigar features an Ecuador Habano wrapper and Nicaraguan tobaccos in the blend.

The wrapper is the last tobacco leaf to be rolled on the cigar, so it is the one the smoker will see.
Ecuadorian Habano wrapper has become one of the most used cigar wrappers in the market. Grown primarily by the Oliva family, this tobacco originated from Habano or H2000 seeds brought to Ecuador from Cuba. This leaf is rich and flavorful thanks to the temperate climate of Ecuador and the quality of its volcanic soil.

Nicaragua
The binder is a full tobacco leaf that is used to roll the cigar, binding the filler tobaccos together.
Nicaraguan cigar binders are produced mainly in Esteli and Jalapa, both lands with volcanic soil and excellent climate for growing tobacco. Binders grown in Jalapa have sweet undertones. Corojo, Habana2000, Criollo, and Maduro binders are all produced in Nicaragua.

Firm construction, pretty open draw. Burn was mostly even in the first third, but went out a couple of times and needed to be relit twice. Full bodied with bold and spicy flavors of earthy cedar and black pepper.

At first this was fairly good. However the draw was a bit tight. Into the 2nd third the wrapper split and draw got harder. RH was 65. Any more it probably would have had hardly any draw. Any less and wrapper would have degraded. Not bad for the price but my experience not as good as other reviews claim. Burn was great but the hard draw and splitting wrapper knocked score down for me

There is a balance of full flavor and strength in this cigar. If you don't like a lot of spice then this isn't the one for you. Construction is impeccable with an oily wrapper and an always good burn line. Great bang for the buck. There are more expensive cigars that just don't match up to this one.

Wow. This stick starts out full and complex. Pepper, spices, cocoa, leather, dark chocolate, fruit, creaminess. Unfortunately, it didn't maintain that full-bodied complexity for too long and the flavor profile simmered down to predominantly red pepper with a leather & dark chocolate background. That being said, this stick was divine. I'd have smoked another right after the first if I had another available.

Prior to lighting, barnyard and earthy scents are easily detectable from the gorgeous Ecuadorian Habano wrapper. From the unlit foot of the La Amistad there are cocoa and leather aromas. An easy cold draw lets through earth, pepper, cocoa and dried fruit notes. The Hoyo La Amistad begins with some pepper and earthy notes right from the start. As the Hoyo La Amistad gets going, there is a steady pepper that's backed up by notes of earth, cocoa, espresso and a slight saltiness. On the retrohale, there is a pleasant blend of cocoa and pepper. Black pepper tends to be the dominant note as the cigar burns into the second third. Earth, cocoa and coffee combine with the pepper throughout the second third of the cigar, and the pepper really picks up during the final third of the cigar, although it doesn't ever become overpowering. Complex yet smooth. The draw on the Hoyo La Amistad by AJ Fernandez is near perfect. The rum drinker will find that the La Amistad pairs very nicely with a good sipping rum.

I tried the Hoyo in robusto size and was so pleased with it, that I bought a box. But I liked them so much, I wanted a larger size so I could enjoy each cigar longer; and, so, I bought a box of the Gigante. This is a good cigar. It just doesn't match the exquisite balance of flavors in the robusto. Had I not smoked the robusto first, I probably would rate this cigar higher. Good full flavor. Good price. Just, by comparison, not superlative like the robusto.

Very interesting stick... Looks good and feels equally nice. First third was medium and grassy with hints of citrus. Second third grew to a medium-full with big, long black and red pepper flavors with subtle coffee/cocoa and molasses notes. Final third developed to full with a combo of all the aforementioned flavors and the addition of cinnamon. The draw from start to finish was a little tighter than I would have liked but the burn was decent. I bought a box of these only knowing that I like Hoyo and I like AJ Fernandez; the result is a good evolving smoke at a reasonable price.
