Traditionally, Altadis has manufactured its Montecristo cigars in the Dominican Republic. Their 2014 release, Montecristo Espada, is their first Montecristo made in Nicaragua by the Plasencia Family. The cigar is made with especially aged tobaccos grown by Plasencia, and offers a rich and complex smoke. The Montecristo Espada wrapper is a Habano Jalapa Vintage 2010, binder is a Habano Jalapa Vintage 2009, and fillers are Habano Jalapa Seco, Habano Ometepe Viso and Habano Condega Ligero harvested in 2008.

Despite many decades of war and revolution in this Central American country, the cigar industry has thrived due to the hard work and tenacity of Cuban exiles to the land such as Plasencia, Padron, Oliva, Ortez, and others. Tobacco has been a force of social stability, and the country is now one of the principal exporters of premium cigars in the world.

The wrapper is the last tobacco leaf to be rolled on the cigar, so it is the one the smoker will see.
Nicaraguan cigar wrappers are produced mainly in Esteli and Jalapa, both lands with volcanic soil and excellent climate for growing tobacco. Wrappers grown in Jalapa have sweet undertones. Corojo, Habana2000, Criollo, and Maduro wrappers are all produced in Nicaragua.

The binder is a full tobacco leaf that is used to roll the cigar, binding the filler tobaccos together.
Nicaraguan cigar binders are produced mainly in Esteli and Jalapa, both lands with volcanic soil and excellent climate for growing tobacco. Binders grown in Jalapa have sweet undertones. Corojo, Habana2000, Criollo, and Maduro binders are all produced in Nicaragua.

Filler is the term used to describe the tobacco inside a cigar or the "guts" of the cigar.

Good cigar, with impressive bands. I tasted salty caramel, with salt being the predominant flavor, which calmed down towards the final third. It burned unevenly from the get-go, and I had to keep on retouching it. I don't think I will be including it in my regular rotation.

What a fantastic looking cigar, loads of bands and vertly up market looking! Take off the bands and the wrapper is perfect still. Used a v-cut and the draw was too loose from what I like, but still ok. Instant spice and pepper from the start especially on the retro. First cigar Ive ever got cinnamon from??? Loads of nut flavours especially hazelnut and Brazil nut... The spice continued through the whole smoke until the end when coffee and Coco took over

Plasencia seems to also use too much when gluing on their labels I’ve found. RH 63%\70F at smoking time. Flavor ok but not memorable.

This can easily become anyone's new favorite stick. Cacao and dark coffee in cold draw. Smooth, great flavor combination of sweetness, floral almost citrus and spices. Well balanced taste of cedar, cacao and hay. Smooth, nearly silky smoke. Razor sharp burn and perfect draw. Loved it and will order more of these.

This cigar is an eyefull and a handfull but in a good way. Very attractive presentation and well constructed large Churchill. Nice full draw and even burn. Made in collaboration with Placentia and I can taste both with the earthiness and citrus notes with some spice. Very enjoyable 2 hour smoke that I paired with a Jack Daniels single barrel select to celebrate my daughter's bday.

This is one of my go to sticks, I do not smoke many other Monte's anymore since I believe this one is superior to most of the regular ones. This has a nice balance to it medium body, lots of flavor with some spicy notes to it. Out of this line, i prefer this size due to the ring gauge. This cigar is amazingly consistent, I have not had one that draws bad yet.

Bought the Espada Guard from Neptune. First impressions were good, it is a good looking well crafted cigar. The 3 bands are a bit annoying as you have to take off 2 of them to light the cigar which is a bit of a pain. Prelight aromas are grassy with a hint of sweetness. The first third of the cigar was great. Beautiful balance of flavor and good draw,burn etc. It is after this that it went downhill for me on this stick. Through the middle of the cigar it becomes very more earthy and leathery and the subtle sweetness that balanced this dissipates. Also lost the light twice through the middle of the cigar which could have affected the flavor slightly the head clogged on me once and i needed to use a punch to open up a couple orifices in the cut (which was a straight cut just below the radius on the head). Burn was a bit inconsistent and needed to be touched up a few times. I smoked this while out at a bar and never really let it sit for more than a couple minutes so I was surprised by the need for so much maintenance. All in All it was an okay cigar but I believe for my palette the quillon or ricasso would be a better choice from what I see on the tasting notes.

This is a unique Montecristo in that it is not made in the Dominican Republic. The Montecristo Espada is made by Plasencia in Nicaragua through a collaboration with Altadis. A pure 100% Nicaraguan Montecristo. This cigar has a flawless appearance and a beautiful triple cap, although I find that taking off the foot band and mid band a bit annoying. They do tear off easily without any damage to the wrapper. The wrapper is a Habano from Jalapa and the fillers are from Jalapa, Ometepe and Condega (seco, viso, and ligero). When you get this puppy, make sure to let it acclimate in your humidor for a month or two (then thank me for this tip). This cigar will reward you with a creamy, sweet flavor with hints of spice, nuts, coffee and leather. If you got a bit annoyed at taking off the 2 bands as I did, believe me that the flavor will make it up to you in spades.

I love the look of this cigar with its triple band and the beautiful graphics. It's a 7x56 but there's something about it that feels bigger than usual in my hand... it's got a lot of heft to it. The pre-light aroma is nice. It's not really strong or extraordinary, but it's certainly worth enjoying for a moment before toasting. Post-toast, this cigar comes alive with rich woodsy grassy alfalfa overtones and a beautiful herbal sweetness that is quite remarkable. The burn required some intermittent coaching along the way, but it was a minimal distraction from the overall experience. I've nothing to say about the draw other than it was within the range of perfect. The only significant problem that I had with this cigar was the center band. It was very difficult to remove. To solve this problem, my recommendation would be to carefully remove it at the same time as you remove the foot band. Overall: An enjoyable cigar, but for that price, I expect better construction and performance. Pairing notes: The wonderful flavors of this cigar will really come alive when paired with a very dry white wine.

I was looking for a Montecristo with a little more punch and spice than more usual classic series. These were the right fit. Right out of the box the wrapper was nice and peppery. More suitable for those that like a stronger cigar profile. The draw on these are a little more tight than what Montecristo usually puts out. Still, a nice deviation from my usual classic series.

Let me tell you first I'm not a big Montecristo smoker, I was trying to find a MC that at least medium in body for me to enjoy. I have had mild MC a while ago and I liked the aroma just wanted more body/strength. The Espada appearance is stunning! Pre-light taste was very bitter, not peppery zing but just plain bitter. Unfortunately the bitterness stuck all first half of the cigar and then went down somewhat. With burn problems, had to touch up 3 times, (did keep it in the humi at least 2 weeks) not sure I'd come back to this cigar... But again, not a big MC smoker, so take this for what it's worth.

At first glance you notice the beautiful presentation from the multiple banded and oily wrapper that covers the Monte Cristo Espada. The Espada stands out due to its detailed bands which stand out from the actual cigar. The cigar has notes of leather, oak, and nutty flavors. The Espada has been beautifully constructed giving a smooth draw that'll please one's palatte. Through out my smoke session I had an even burn not needing to do any correcting. There weren't any cracks with the wrapper. This Espada had been sitting in my humidor for about a month at 75 RH. It was perfect for my liking not too soft. I would expect this cigar to age perfectly. I paired this fine cigar with an espresso and on the second trial with a glass of Glenlivet 12 scotch whiskey. The coffee brought its notes of cocoa and the whiskey amplified the nutmeg flavors. I look forward to another trial of the Mone Cristo Espada.
