Released in 2013, Oliva Serie V Melanio Maduro is the follow up to the highly successful Oliva Serie V Melanio. It comprises the same blend as the Serie V Melanio (Nicaraguan Jalapa filler and binder) but swaps the Ecuador Sumatra wrapper for a San Andres Maduro wrapper grown in Mexico. This is a complex, medium to full bodied smoke.

Despite many decades of war and revolution in this Central American country, the cigar industry has thrived due to the hard work and tenacity of Cuban exiles to the land such as Plasencia, Padron, Oliva, Ortez, and others. Tobacco has been a force of social stability, and the country is now one of the principal exporters of premium cigars in the world.

Cigar wrapper color varies from green (Double Claro or Candela) to black (Maduro or Oscuro) with a full range of browns in between.
Maduro wrapper can go from dark coffee brown with a reddish tint to blackish brown (the latter also called Oscuro).

Mexican San Andres Maduro
The wrapper is the last tobacco leaf to be rolled on the cigar, so it is the one the smoker will see.
Mexican tobacco is very dark and the best leaves can be used as maduro wrappers. San Andres Maduro is a thick, medium bodied dark leaf, also called San Andres Morron. Like Connecticut Broadleaf, San Andres Maduro is stalk cut and used for binder and wrapper.

Nicaragua
The binder is a full tobacco leaf that is used to roll the cigar, binding the filler tobaccos together.
Nicaraguan cigar binders are produced mainly in Esteli and Jalapa, both lands with volcanic soil and excellent climate for growing tobacco. Binders grown in Jalapa have sweet undertones. Corojo, Habana2000, Criollo, and Maduro binders are all produced in Nicaragua.

Filler is the term used to describe the tobacco inside a cigar or the "guts" of the cigar.

The company's flagship brand, Oliva Serie V, has obtained some of the highest ratings in cigar publications worldwide. Their cigars use mostly tobacco harvested by the company in their various farms in Nicaragua.

It is very good but I prefer the original. A lot of molasses, bread and coffee up front. Halfway to the end is intense black coffee and black pepper. Draw started tight but opened up entering the first third. Aroma was incredible. Burn was amazing until last third. Had to touch up.

I prefer the melanio maduro over the natural, but we cannot find much evolution in this cigar when it comes to flavour... is a little white pepper and a strong coffee with no sugar and a kind of leather and cedar too bold , its kind of boring.... the most balanced oliva is masterblend 3 with a broadleaf wrapper on it.....

A maduro San Andres wrapper with a beautful dark chocolate hue is used to cloak this exquisite stick. Upon reaching the end of the first half, you are introduced to new notes of light cinnamon & toasted vanilla. This, for a lack of a better word, makes for one tasty cigar! An excellent cigar with almost flawless construction and performance. To me it smoked as a medium strength with notes of cocoa and nougat or hazelnut. Easily a two hour smoke. I do prefer the regular melanio with the Sumatra wrapper but this is an excellent smoke as well.

Very tasty cigar, smooth and not overpowering. A little inconsistent in the two I smoked; the first one had perfect flavors from beginning to end, the second one was great until it hit the last third, and then some bitterness crept into the mix. Once I smoke the box I have torpedoes, I am going to go for one of the non-torpedo sizes in the future.

A pretty good cigar but not a head-turner! Dark and attractive to a full-flavor fan but cracks and a couple of wrapper protruding stems, mid cigar, dampened my experience. The attractive color invites but although rather well constructed it is bland and unremarkable. I always light in total stillness and no wind but the burn took-off that had to be corrected numerous times. Maybe the ‘roller’ had a bad day. Unexpected WoW. I have tried almost all the other sizes in this blend for quite some time. This little guy ended up being the home run for my pallet. Excellent construction, lots of flavors, many transitions. There's the coffee, some leather in the background, but a distinct flavor of roasting molasses (brought back memories of childhood growing in rum making country). I will get a box of these.

A very interesting hour and half smoke. Started a bit tight but once I got through the tapered head the draw opened up and the burn evened out. First half medium with leather and cocoa with occasional hints of spice. Picked up intensity around half way with more spice and earth and coffee. Construction is impeccable. Maybe not quite as much kick as I like but a superior smoke nonetheless.

This cigar's construction is outstanding. The dark velvety, matte chocolate brown rapper is firm yet supple. The smoke is creamy with the flavor of leather and loam. The burn is even through the entire length of the stick producing a solid, light, salt and pepper ash. The finish is herb, espresso with a hint of clover honey. This is not a stick to be puffed out on the back nine but rather to be savored on the clubhouse veranda as a reward for a sub-par round with a dram of 16 year old Lagavulin...

Handsome little fella. Smokes just as well, and may be my favorite vitola of the melanio series. I think the ring gauge really lends itself to the flavors of this blend and of course the wrapper. You can get really massive, chewy, flavorful clouds of smoke out of this one. Construction is great like any other melanio, so draw and burn is automatic. If the short smoke time bothers you, just smoke two!! Highly recommended!!

I can only knock some points off taste because mine didn't really come to life until the halfway point. But because the fully developed flavor profile was so good, I have to get a few more for testing! One review I saw online said this maduro version had hints of toffee and floral notes and it was bang on. Perhaps a more rounded version than the OG due to the wrapper sweetness, and highly recommended to both melanio and maduro fans.

Since its introduction nearly a decade ago, I have been a fan of the Oliva Melanio series. The subtle box press, the intricate profile of spice and caramel, the simple yet elegant appearance… all factors that contribute to my fondness of this line. When they released the Maduro variant, I became even more of a fan. In my humble opinion, Oliva took a contender, and turned it into a champion. The Mexican San Andreas wrapper was the perfect addition to an already excellent blend, as it invited notes of chocolate and espresso to the party. It also intensified the sweet caramel flavor already present in the original. Aside from the delicious flavor profile, consistency is the name of the game when it comes to the Melanio. It is very rare to get a box containing that dreaded cigar that seems to want to fight you every inch of the way down. The draw on these are nearly always perfect. Fans of Padron 1964 & 1926 take note…. This cigar is a very close competitor. This smoke will pair nicely with a mellow bourbon, but I found that pairing it with a craft root beer, kind of an eclectic choice, was actually quite amazing. Cheers!

Full disclosure: Oliva is not one of my preferred brand of cigar. However, this cigar has changed my attitude. Good mix of sweetness, pepper, dark coffee, some leather in a smooth smoke that is medium strength and flavor. I'm partial to figurados so I accept a little bit of the initial draw problems. But after that first 1/2" quickly burns away, the easy draw and nice burn starts. This cigar has a beautiful wrapper but not as oily as I prefer. Still it has a great aroma of white chocolate with a hint of maple syrup. I always keep a few of these on hand to share with those that appreciate a good cigar and not just merely the act of puffing. Smoke these in a place with no winds so that you can enjoy the aroma of the smoke.

I really wanted to love this stick, as the base Melanio figurado is a high-rater for me. I also loved the Melanio Maduro Churchill but at least after smoking 1 of these Maduro Figurados, I'll say the Churchill was a better smoke. As can be the case with Figurados, the initial draw was tight and even in the square section of the stick, the draw wasn't as easy as the Churchill. Also the flavors seemed muted vs the Churchill. Maybe it's just my palate today. I have another waiting in the humidor. Just out of the gate, this one didn't "wow" me like the Churchill Melanio Maduro did.

I love this cigar right here. You get some coffee , something floral , spice and just a good aged tobacco flavor. The retrohale is super smooth.

Outstanding cigar. Smokes beautifully. Easy draw, laser sharp burn all the way to the nub. The cigar has good smoke output and a nice aroma. The double band makes for a very attractive presentation. This is a top shelf cigar and one of my favorites. My favorite? The Torpedo version!

The Oliva V Melanio is without question, one of the brands best and has become one of my "must have" humidor staples. To add to that a Maduro wrapper is simply icing on the cake (well, cigar!) The Robusto size is a perfect smoke for any time, day or night; not too large nor too small. Such an enjoyable smoke and box pressed, too! What's not to like??

The is one of my favorites. Superb smoothness, great taste and aroma, consistent draw, and thick creamy smoke. It had a perfect burn with a nice solid white ash. I prefer the Torpedo size. I always keep some in the humidor.

Definitely a great cigar as are all of the Melanios. I prefer the robusto for overall taste and smoking pleasure. This still had the classic creamy chocolate smoothness. Just a little more bitter in the profle when compared to the Robusto. Still a stellar stick.

By far, my favorite Oliva cigar. Most people only try the natural, but in my opinion the Maduro is a silky smooth milk chocolate bomb. I have never had a bad one they burn perfectly every time. I like these with at least 6 months of rest time but they are still tasty after a couple weeks of acclimation. Neptune always ships cigars in proper humidity conditions, so you could probably smoke these right off the truck.

I love the Melanio! Everything about this cigar says quality: construction, aroma, burn, taste all five stars in my book. Even holding this box pressed Torpedo in your hands feels good. For me the Jalapa tobacco used to make up part of the filler gives this stick just enough spice to linger on your palate well after you exhale. Overall, this is one cigar you'll be smoking down to your finger tips.

Look, I am generally a huge fan of maduros. The creamy smoothness of the maduro is what I really enjoy. And Olivas, especially the Melanio, generally already are smooth and flavorful, if on the moderate/mild side - there's a time for that (it's a great day cigar). Both the maduro robusto melanio and this torpedo I feel lose something vs the natural -- they have a harsher, "drier" character - almost dry woody - that to me is a step down from the natural. And they don't pick up the smoothness. Whereas the other maduros (other series) from Oliva are more chocolatey and smooth. Worth a try, but I'd stick to the naturals of the Melanio. Burn here was a little off starting in the 2nd half, including a relight for no apparent reason. 3-stars on aroma/taste.

I have been a big fan of the Oliva Melanio robusto and figurado. Plus I generally love maduros. This just felt a little lacking. The maduro chocolate / raisin notes didn't really shine through like I would have expected. I'll give it another try after some humidor time. On this first run, I'd say the regular Melanio robusto is a better stick.

Worth every penny. If you are debating between the natural and the maduro.. get both.. okay, seriously though. They are both excellent smokes but if I had to pick. It would be the maduro. The maduro had a bit more complexity behind the flavor and transitions.

This cigar has quickly become one of my go to cigars--love everything about this blend. The cigar has a gorgeous dark, oily San Andrés Maduro wrapper. I also love a torpedo box press cigar. Upon first light, a rich, mocha aroma comes out. Into the first third, notes of sweet, earthy and dark coffee appear along with some spice and pepper but extremely smooth. No bitterness at all! Into the second third, still same flavors are apparent along with a little sweetness coming through--- just a great rich flavor. Ash and burn are still perfect. That last third pretty much keeps the same notes but it's fine because it has such a great flavor profile that you don't want it to end. Enjoyed every bit from beginning to end.

Delicious taste, gorgeous wrapper, and best of all, it's not super expensive. This could easily be priced a bit higher, but thankfully, we can get it at a great value. Very exquisite smoke. High class taste, down-to-earth pricetag.
