Joya de Nicaragua Antano 1970 is a cigar created as a tribute to the Nicaraguan puro of yesteryear, a cigar so good that it had been chosen to replace the Cuban cigars in the White House after the Cuban embargo. This is a powerhouse of a smoke, handmade with all Nicaraguan tobacco that is robust and spicy. Joya de Nicaragua Antano 1970 has been aged to develop a complex flavor profile that tantalizes the seasoned cigar smoker with notes of pepper, almond, coffee, cocoa and cedar. The cigar is made by Alejandro Martinez Cuenca, the man who brought back Nicaragua's oldest cigar brand, Joya de Nicaragua.

Most cigars are manufactured in the Caribbean and Central America.
Despite many decades of war and revolution in this Central American country, the cigar industry has thrived due to the hard work and tenacity of Cuban exiles to the land such as Plasencia, Padron, Oliva, Ortez, and others. Tobacco has been a force of social stability, and the country is now one of the principal exporters of premium cigars in the world.

Cigar wrapper color varies from green (Double Claro or Candela) to black (Maduro or Oscuro) with a full range of browns in between.
Colorado is a medium brown color also known as EMS or English Market Selection as this used to be the color with more popularity in England than in America.

Nicaraguan
The wrapper is the last tobacco leaf to be rolled on the cigar, so it is the one the smoker will see.
Nicaraguan cigar wrappers are produced mainly in Esteli and Jalapa, both lands with volcanic soil and excellent climate for growing tobacco. Wrappers grown in Jalapa have sweet undertones. Corojo, Habana2000, Criollo, and Maduro wrappers are all produced in Nicaragua.

Nicaragua
The binder is a full tobacco leaf that is used to roll the cigar, binding the filler tobaccos together.
Nicaraguan cigar binders are produced mainly in Esteli and Jalapa, both lands with volcanic soil and excellent climate for growing tobacco. Binders grown in Jalapa have sweet undertones. Corojo, Habana2000, Criollo, and Maduro binders are all produced in Nicaragua.

I've never found the Antano to be as strong as advertised but I did enjoy this Churchill more than the other vitolas. Slightly firm but solid draw with a burn requiring a few touch ups but nice flavors of cedar and nuts as advertised with some pepper emerging on the back half. Lasted me well over an hour and a half. Good smoke overall.

Great cigar. Start was a easy draw with a leathery and pepper. About a 1/4 in the draw became very tight but opened up shortly after and could really enjoy some complexity of spices and little sweet. Really enjoyed and was surprised by the last 2/3 of this cigar. Great smoke!!

Definitely the OG type cigar. The aroma reminded me of "Abuelo" (grandpa). Straight forward aged tobacco, cedar, some nutty background. Medium without being boring. I would definitely take this to go fishing, playing poker or anything you want to do without being too "distracted" by a cigar.

A truly Nicaraguan. The wrapper, the cold draw, the aroma, everything is there. This is one of my favorites cigar ever, When I feel overwhelmed by all the cigars out there, I always come back to this one. Even the first puffs, the cigar has an array of flavors. The first notes and one can feel the sweetness and the strength…chocolate, some pepper and a few minutes later, a dash of floral joins in the notes. The sweetness tone down and a subliminal tone of dates/raisins maybe, which then change into a spicy sweetness at the end of the first third. all this flavors melting on one that balance the pepper in the background The second third presents the same set of flavors but with more richness and body. At this point, the cigar is full-bodied with all of the richness of a Nicaraguan Puro. The final third of the cigar is an explosion of flavors, very bold and satisfying. There’s fruity, pepper, chocolate/cocoa and there is some creaminess as well.

Overall, everything I’ve tried from JDN has been worthwhile, and the original Antaño has been no exception. This is just a classic Nicaraguan cigar without the bells and whistles. Sometimes they feel a bit firm on the draw, but many times it draws just fine. For this price point, you can’t go wrong.

Like the Joya de Nicaragua line of Antano 's. A little bit of a tight draw at first. Once you get it going, the rest of the smoke has a good consistent flavor.

I decided to pick this up because of two reasons: 1. Ron Perlman claims this is one of his favorites.. he supposedly smoked these (the Gran consul to be exact) while filming Hellboy and Sons of Anarchy. 2. I was interested in the complexity that these are known for. The first third really tested me. I appreciate the notes/flavors that I have not tasted such as figs, raisins and the sweet cherry but I've never been a fan of figs and cherries. I'm glad I stuck with it and smoked it till the end. I don't like the cherry and fig notes but I may buy this stick once in a while to have some variety.

Even though it's billed as robust, I found this kind of a medium strength taste. Not that it was bad...on the contrary, the flavor was rich and even. I got some cedar, cinnamon, dried grass and toast flavors with cedar coming prevalent at half way smoked. It was a very pleasant smoke. The draw was super tight (which is my preference) but perhaps a bit much. The burn was nicely even to a point then it started to wink out. I caught it a few times and managed to get it going again but it did get one re-light. I'd buy this one again.

Just as I’ve heard from others, construction and burn is kind of inconsistent, it the flavor profile is really what carries these and makes it all worth the touch-ups. Dark cocoa, coffee, graham cracker spice, ripe dark fruit, it’s all here! Nice buy if you get them on sale!

Fantastic cigar and this ring gauge is great! Really brings out the spice flavors for me. Appearance is consistently good, as is the draw. Burn is pretty good, never had a serious problem. Aroma and taste are great. This cigar is a fantastic value for the price - over an hour smoke if you're not drawing on it constantly and great complexity.

This is an absolutely wonderful cigar !!! Great construction, aroma and flavor. A nice tight, grayish, white ash that holds on for a long time before falling off in a good solid chunk. Unfortunately sometimes the draw might be a little tight or may require a few relights but don’t let that stop you from buying a box of these scrumptious beauties. I definitely recommend buying this cigar, they are a must have for your humidor !

It is hard to keep track of one favorite smokes with such a vast selection of brands in the market. When I don’t want to experiment and just want an awesome cigar I always come back to this one: Joya de Nicaragua Antaño 1970. Bold, rich, complex and well constructed, what else can I ask for? Earthy notes with hints of pepper and some wood and floral tones and this cigar is as flavorful as a cigar can be. Medium bodied in strength but full in flavor, this cigar is like having a party on my palate and my nose. The aroma is of chocolate and raisins with a touch of leather that translates into more flavor and makes this cigar so delicious and satisfying...at least for me. Excellent draw and a even burning line with a strong beautiful gray ash. This cigar is a real gem.

Infuriating cigar this was for me. Super Tight draw had a hard time keeping it lit, but when I was able to pull some smoke from it, I found it to be very enjoyable, but having to constantly torch it and then suck my eyes to the back of my head to pull a little smoke wasn’t really worth it to me, too bad because like I said the smoke was fantastic when I got some.

One of my favorites. I have been buying them individually for about a year now and they are awesome. They will last you about 2 good hours. The only thing that can be hit or miss the draw. Sometimes you'll have to cut a little more off the cap to get the draw just right. Other than that these are amazing! 9/10 for sure.

These are super high quality cigars. I have been smoking these for years and every one of them has burned true and beautifully. I smoked these while reading President Grant's memoirs, and enjoyed both books and cigars extremely well. Lots of earth and leather with a dose of spice. The Snow White ash and the razor sharp burn look great. An exquisite cigar!

There's a lot of cigars out there that I read about as being full and powerful. I don't doubt they are, but none of them come close to these bad boys. This is NOT a morning cigar unless you work the graveyard shift. Full and robust taste and aroma are under statements. The greatest thing about these full cigars... they're delicious! One of the finest cigars money can buy, and Castro and Raul can stick it where the sun don't shine.

Not impressed. Lose roll. Difficult to keep burning and got pretty hot like it was burning down the middle of the stick. Ended up tossing it after 50% burned.

Though this cigar has been on the market for quite a while now, it has not lost any of its appeal. It is a big, fat (perhaps not by today's standards, but still...) Nicaraguan Puro that is well packed and feels heavy in the hand. Its reddish brown chocolaty wrapper is beautiful and flawless. Be patient when you first light it as the draw will be tight until you work through the tapered foot. Once it opens up however, it will open with a bang. You will be hit with an intense and wonderful aroma followed by flavors of spice, cocoa, molasses, raisin, cedar, earth and licorice. The spice will get more intense as you work your way through the stick, but it at no point does it override the other flavors. The ash is sturdy and white. When you figure out just how good this cigar is in combination with its very reasonable price tag...you will understand why there are always at least a few of them in my humidor. Much like a 64.5 Mustang or a well worn pair of Levy's, this cigar is a classic.

I don't know that I have ever held a better constructed cigar but that's just the start. The Gran Consul while still a powerful smoke is milder than the Belicoso which, IMHO, allows the complexity to shine though. The tastes? Hold on to your hat! About 20% in I started getting lots of bacon, yes bacon. This lasts to the nub along with similar tastes of sweet hickory, BBQ and outdoor grilling. There is some leather and you get the pepper as well which one finds with all Antano 1970s. An uneven burn in the last third is all that stops me from giving this incredible experience a classic level rating of 95+. 94...

I'm probably a bit too much of an amateur to have fully appreciated this cigar. It was beautiful to look at, the smoke was blue and great, but it had somewhat of a difficult draw which made it hard for me to keep it lit if I wasn't puffing at it constantly, and the taste was odd although not unpleasant. I'll probably come back to Joya in another year or so and see if I changed my mind.

This very well may be the best size for this cigar in my opinion. It offers a great wrapper to filler ratio that gives a greater range in tastes from it's larger versions. It's a fine example of what Nicaraguan cigars should be.

Not only does this cigar look good and taste great , it also smells amazing--which is a big plus when smoking in public!! The ash on this cigar is perfect -- mostly white and very solid. It burned even through the entire smoke. It begins with a peppery/spicey flavor with woody notes. The second third has woody, earthy notes with a little sweetness mixed in--great mix. The cigar smoked amazing til the very end -- doesn't get bitter, harsh or hot. After a year of wanting to smoke this cigar I am so extremely happy that I finally did! The construction and price point is great along with the amazing flavors and smells of this smoke. I definitely will be adding this to my humidor.

I don't see a way to edit my previous review so I will just mend it. The other review I posted immediately after smoking the cigar and now that IO slept on it I realize that the cigar is great I wasn't just ready for it yet. It had great full flavor, great aroma, and while I like a strong cigar this one was just too strong for me... The small burn issues could've been this particular cigar. So I will says this is a great cigar ... for a seasoned smoker. I will give it another try in a while - will go with a smaller Belicoso or Robusto Grande though.

Decent stick but not worth the price. The draw was firm with minimal smoke. Overall flavor was that of a woody, earthiness with a touch of a coffee. It was also slightly spicy but nothing over the top. The burn was great and construction was flawless.
