Flor de Selva Cigars

Founded in France in 1995 by the ultra-passionate yet free-spirited Maya Selva, Flor de Selva originally established a strong market in Europe before finding its way across the pond to the U.S. market a couple of decades after its inception. Having seen much success during its first stint, it didn't take very long at all for the American people to taste and subsequently fall in love with the delectable gourmet Honduran and Nicaraguan blends Maya Selva proudly had to offer.

Flor de Selva by Maya Selva is a medium bodied long filler cigar handmade in Honduras. A Honduran puro, its Connecticut Shade wrapper is grown in Honduras, with binder and filler also from Honduras (binder from Jamastran, fillers are Viso Jamastran and LIgero Azacualpa) . Made in the San Judas Tadeo factory in Danli, Honduras, the taste profile is woody, with a touch of cedar and dried fruit.

This specially prepared sampler offers a unique tasting experience. Each pack comes with two Flor de Selva No. 15 cigars by Maya Selva Cigars. One is a vintage cigar that was handmade in 2012 and aged in a closely monitored, climate-controlled environment. The other one was rolled in 2022. Both feature a smooth Honduran Connecticut Shade wrapper, a Honduran Jamastran binder and Honduran filler leaves. Maya Selva Cigars created this extraordinary sampler to allow cigar aficionados the opportunity to compare and contrast a vintage cigar with a recently rolled version. This is one vintage taste test you do not want to miss. To make it easy to perform this taste test, Maya Selva removed the guess work and risks involved with aging a cigar. All you have to do is smoke the cigars. No further aging is required. It is recommended you smoke both cigars at the same time, alternating between them. First unveiled in 2018, the Flor de Sleva Zodiac Series has become a sought after limited-edition cigar. The Series celebrates the Chinese New Year (aka Lunar New Year or Spring Festival). Each annual release is named after the Zodiac character that coincides with the Chinese New Year. However, the Zodiac Series also shares its roots with Mayan culture. The Mayans, an ancient civilization that inhabited western Honduras, believed that everyone has a spirit animal (or nahual) who guides them through life. When developing the Zodiac Series, Maya Selva Cigars fused the Chinese Zodiac with Mayan spiritual beliefs by incorporating Mayan hieroglyphics and art in the design of the cigar boxes and bands. The cigars are handmade in Honduras and are composed entirely of Honduran tobaccos. Its red-hued wrapper comes from Jamastran, a region in Honduras that is highly regarded for its fine tobacco.

Impressed, The 2012 was so much better, fuller flavors and smoother, rounder, more harmonious. I felt the burn was more consistent. I picked up a more gingerbready spiciness as opposed to a herby spice in the 2022. At the end of the 2012, I thought it showed a fuller flavor and more intense mouth feel. Overall an awesome experience.

These cigars are good when your time is limited - like when having a drink on the slopes while skiing. A bigger cigar (like my favorite Maya Selva Robusto) has more flavor, but it takes more than an hour, and one hates to leave it behind in an ashtray. That's why I keep reordering Siestas.

This is what I call a Sunday cigar. A nice medium body and medium-minus strength throughout the smoking experience. The cigar starts with a sweetness reminiscent of an Eiroa Jamastran, but turns to cedar, spice, and nuts pretty early. The second half became woody and nutty with an early undertone and occasional hints of sharp cedar/citrus.

this one really flied under the radar. one of the best cigars i've smoked in a long time. dark noted but not a pepper or spice bomb., just lots of delicious tobacco flavors with some dried fruit on the retrohale. medium body and strength. i did find much improvement after about 6 months aging vs. the first couple i smoked. this is a great cigar.

Lost a star for appearance due to a small crack in wrapper. The Brazilian binder keeps the cigar interesting. The aged fillers gives it a very cedary note. Flavors ramped up at half way point that provides a nice long milk coffee finish.

This month I wanted to explore a different country. Honduras has been becoming very popular lately and one of the top companies that has been known for the this regions quality is Flor De Selva. It is known to a lot of people, mostly because of the owner Maya Selva’s dedication to making great cigars. At first look this aged maduro wrapper of this cigar makes it look like a chocolate bar. (Don’t worry, I didn’t eat it.) It has a very earthy cold draw which is pleasant for chewers. At toasting and first puff, the earth and spice is very dominant. It has a great draw and produces a nice foot smoke aroma. Getting into the 2nd inch, I taste bits of dry coco and robust coffee notes. This made it much easier to smoke since I was drinking coffee with this review and made this a very enjoyable experience. Passing the half way point the taste of aged tobacco over takes my taste buds. It had a little bit of a running burn which corrected it self. Flavors and draw has not changed but, the smoke seems to have got a lot smoother in the retro hale. Reaching to the finale inch and a half, it did produce a small bit of sweet fig like notes but was still dominant of aged tobacco. My overall experience was good, it had little complexity but was very consistent and required no relighting. Best paired with coffee or a chocolate wine.

The No 20 Robusto has the Habano wrapper with fillers from Honduras which makes this an excellent medium bodied smoke. They claim the flavor profile has notes of spices, tobacco, and earth which describes this stick perfectly. It's a great after dinner smoke with a cup of coffee or a glass of wine. It is in my regular rotation.

Great find for Connecticut shade wrapper enthusiasts. The Flor de Selva Double Corona earned "Cigar of the Year" by L'Amateur de Cigare in 2017 and "Best Buy" by Cigar Journal in 2015. This Honduran puro is a different take on the classic Conn Shade cigar, as you will find sweet marshmallow, cinnamon, and creamy flavors with a sprinkle of nut and pepper (like a sweet potato casserole haha). There is a woodiness and earthiness to the flavor that balances splendidly with the to other notes. The aroma is subtle and refined. The cigar burns and draws like a champ and it is overall a very pleasant, mild to medium smoke with a body that is right in the middle and flavorful. Whether you are a novice wanting to try a tasty, well crafted Honduran or a more seasoned smoker who wants a milder offering in their humidor rotation, this cigar fits the bill. I tried this cigar for the first time and it was a very enjoyable smoke. I thought this was a more milder than medium cigar. The cigar was creamy, sweet and there was a cedar like taste mixed with a hint of pepper. The draw was very good and the burn was pretty even. This cigar was a change of pace from the maduro's I usually smoke and I would order it again.

I love this cigar, always available in my humidor. Smoking it slower it develops nice sweet fruity cocoa hints.

Great looking cigar; you can tell they value the quality of their build. That being said the burn was a little off but only needed one touch up. Very mild at the beginning with light earthy notes and cedar. Gains more body toward the middle and end and finishes very clean with no harsh aftertaste. Can easily smoke down to the nub. Overall a well made, quality smoke for anytime.

A very mellow cigar that starts off spicy then dissipates quickly. It continues with strong nutty tones and I’m getting a hint of cedar and citrus. Sadly from the 2/3rd onwards it flat lines quickly and finishes with a lacklustre taste.

Maya Selva’s Flor de Selva Maduro Toro is a medium-to-full bodied stick that sports a Habano Maduro wrapper, a Brazilian Mata Fina binder and a Honduran filler. This stick’s wrapper has an oily complexion and a rich chocolate color to it. The Flor de Selva Maduro wrapper has a few visible veins and its seams are barely noticeable. The cold draw provided a mix of mocha (which I would describe as a combination of coffee and chocolate), cream, and a slight cedar note. During the first third, the mocha remained in the forefront. At times the mocha exhibited more of a classic chocolate flavor while at other times it was more like cocoa powder. Meanwhile the cedar, pepper, and nut flavors lingered in the background. During the second third, the Flor de Selva Maduro Toro transitioned to more of a classic coffee note. At this stage, the chocolate component did diminish somewhat, but it didn’t totally dissipate. By the last third, the coffee notes remained primary. The cedar notes had also made their way into the forefront. The burn of the Flor de Selva Maduro performed perfectly and created a beautiful light gray ash. The draw was excellent. If you’re looking to make a move from medium to full body in terms of strength, the Flor de Selva Maduro is a very good option because it delivers excellent flavor, provides plenty of complexity, and it has a super constructed. This cigar is that total package.

Maya Selva has been in the market for more than 20 years now. The company is named for its owner, Maya Selva. Maya Selva Cigars has had a presence in Europe for quite some time and has starting to create a fan base in the USA market. I’m not a fan of Connecticut wrappers but this cigar is one of the few ones I love and enjoy the most. The beginning of this cigar is great. Flor de Selva Connecticut Toro filled my palate with a blend of cream, wood, a hint of pepper, and a wonderfull sweetness that makes the cigar flavor rich from the first puff. One can feel the cream and the sweetness on as the cigar burns through the first 2-3 inches, the other notes move into the background. The pepper lingered quite a bit on the tongue but is never too much, just the right amount. For the second third, I found the cedar mixes with the cream notes in the front line. With some almost unnoticed natural tobacco and mild pepper notes in the background, the sweetness is still there but like the perfect companion of the overall flavor. The last third, I would say is my favorite part. The pepper increases a tad and the natural tobacco notes are predominant now along with cedar notes. The burn line continued straight from start to finish. The ash was tight and solid with a beautiful gray color. This cigar fall into the mild to medium range in terms of strength. I found the body of the Flor de Selva Connecticut Toro started out mild-medium-bodied and becomes a solid medium by the second half, keeping that strength until the end. This cigars is flavorful, along with it’s flawless construction guarantees a joyful experience.

Maya Selva Cigars’ Flor de Selva No. 15 is a Honduran puro in every sense of the word. It features tobaccos from regions in Honduras that are well-known for making some of the finest cigars in the world. Handmade, the Flor de Selva features a rich-brown Connecticut seed wrapper from Talanga. The wrapper is draped over a Habano Jamastran binder, which contains a specially blended Viso Jamastran and LIgero Azacualpa filler. An inviting hint of spice comes off the wrapper when you give it a pre-light sniff. The cold draw is nice and easy with an earthy, slightly sweet aroma while the foot of the cigar serves up a refreshing cedar scent. Once lit, this medium-strength Connecticut offers subtle spices with hearty cedar notes and a warm leathery taste with just a touch of dried fruit. The Flor de Selva also gives off a salty taste that is quite enjoyable without being overpowering. This torpedo burns true from beginning to end and gives off a smooth medium-gray ash that can only be described as flawless. The Flor de Selva Coleccion Aniversario No. 20 was first introduced in 2015 exclusively as a lancero. Because of the warm reception it received, Maya Selva decided to create several new vitolas of the blend, including this one, the petite corona. In the middle of 2016, the cigars were introduced to Europe at an event called "La Nuit de l'Amateur" held at the Pavilion Gabriel in Paris. We finally got them here in the states during 2017.The wrapper on this Honduran puro is an attractive milk chocolate color with a slight oily sheen.The aroma wafting off of the wrapper reminds me of a crisp October night in New England....tobacco, earth and subtle spices mingling with the scent of fallen leaves. After a fiery kiss, the smoke I began pulling out of it possessed many of the same characteristics it had pre-light, but with a added layer of caramel and a hint of white pepper. The flavor profile fluctuated slightly as I burned my way through it, but stayed fairly consistent I would rate the strength of this stick as medium, possible moving up to a medium plus toward the end of the second third / start of the final third. Construction is top notch, and the ash a light grey that held firm throughout. This is another thoroughly enjoyable cigar from a unique cigar company. Often times we get stuck in routines. We immediately go to what we know and are comfortable with. I advocate stepping off of the beaten path every now and again. The worst thing that can happen is the discovery of newfound comforts and newfound routines. I would pair this with something clean, like a dry gin martini, or even San Pellegrino. I would avoid overly sweet, smokey bourbons with this particular stick. Cheers!

Cold draw I got leather cocoa and some earthiness. 1st third I sensed some pepper, leather and cocoa with a touch of spice. 2nd third I got something like clove, more leather and graham cracker. I must note this cigar burns slow so be sure you have time to enjoy. Last third gives me more leather with spice then a berry or plum type sense with black pepper. All the time this cigar ran medium full. At no time did this cigar over power me but it let me know what it was doing throughout the smoke. I got an hour and 15 minutes from this girl and it was superb. A must try for sure.

I am becoming a huge fan of Flor De Selva cigars-- especially since the owner, Maya Selva, is one cool lady! I was very excited to try their newest 20th anniversary Honduran Puro release. This double banded cigar has a beautiful appearance with a slight oiliness to the wrapper. When you touch this cigar it seems to be pretty well packed. Upon first light, earth and cedar notes are upfront which continued throughout the first third. The same notes continued on through the second third as well with a slight pepper in the background. Into the last third, pretty much the same notes were apparent along with natural tobacco notes, but very well balanced. Overall, this was a solid medium strength and bodied cigar. Even though I didn't feel it had much complexity, it was quite enjoyable--very smooth! This can definitely be smoked any time day or night. The construction was perfect--no relights, long ash, burned cool to the very end. The draw was perfect with a little resistance. This is definitely a cigar worth trying. Enjoy!

I like the appearance and feel of this cigar, much like the San Lotano Bull wrapper. Smooth and dusty wrapper. When I first lit the cigar the notes were nut-like and woody. The wood notes were not spicy like cedar, but more like toasted oak. The first inch it starts to clear up in body and has a nice chocolate after taste. Halfway into it and the notes are still prominent and just heavenly smooth, clean, and no bite. I do recommend eating before smoking this one though, even with it being medium body and smooth. Other than that, Great Maduro smoke for the novice or seasoned veteran. I would definitely buy this cigar again. Cheers to Maya Selva!

I would say this is a mild medium bodied cigar. I received in sampler. I lit it unevenly but it righted itself and burned evenly. I enjoy a firm draw on my cigars and I found this to my liking. Very enjoyable smoke. I may get a box down the line.

Though relatively new to the US market, Maya Selva cigars have been around for over two decades and is a familiar sight in Europe. This one, the No. 15, sports a velvety light brown Ecuadorian Connecticut Shade wrapper with nearly no noticeable veins and zero blemishes. That, combined with a somewhat minimalist band, (no gaudy gold flake, bright colors or embossed edges here!) equates to a very attractive cigar. Pre-light, the stick smells of molasses and hay. Post-light, the molasses remains but combines with layers of nutmeg and cream. It is a mild cigar...almost medium as you move through it but I am still going to call it mild. Construction , draw and smoke output are all excellent. Perfect smoke for a sunny morning. Fans of Montecristo White, Rocky Patel Vintage Connecticut, The Griffins and the alike should take notice and give this line a shot. I was impressed and believe you will be as well. Cheers!
