Byron Cigars

The Byron cigar was named after the famous English poet George Gordon Byron, aka Lord Byron. He is considered one of the greatest English poets, and he greatly influenced the Romantic movement. The Byron cigar dates back to the mid-1800s when they were first crafted by Jose and Eusebio Alfonso in Cuba. After a long hiatus, it was reclaimed and re-established by Nelson Alfonso, a direct descendent of the original founders, in the 1990s. Handmade in Costa Rica, Bryon cigars are known for their strength, body, construction, aroma, flavor and offer a traditional Cuban-style smoking experience. The cigars are aged for five years prior to being shipped.

Byron 1850

Crafted in Costa Rica at the Tabacos de Costa Rica factory, the Byron 1850 cigars are aged in cedar and French oak. The cigar features a natural Ecuadorian wrapper placed over a Peruvian binder and a filler composed of tobaccos from the Dominican Republic and Nicaragua. This four-nation blend offers a medium bodied smoking indulgence with a deep complexity of flavors.

Byron 19th Century

In 1848, Jose and Eusebio Alfonso, two cigar crafters from Havana, Cuba, released the Byron cigar. The cigars were named after the great English poet Lord Byron. 175 years later the Byron 19th Century was launched to honor the original. In 1998, Nelson Alfonso, founder of Selected Tobaccos and the original owners’ great-great-great grandson was able to recover the name and re-launch the brand. The Byron 19th Century cigar’s blend is composed of an Ecuadorian wrapper, an undisclosed binder, and a Nicaraguan, Peruvian and undisclosed filler. Once rolled, the cigars are allowed to age for five years so their flavors can develop. The cigar is medium-bodied and offers a rich complexity of flavors. They are handmade in Costa Rica.

From the moment the Byron Selección 1850 No. 4 touched flame, it was clear this wasn’t going to be your average smoke—it came out swinging with a rich combo of cocoa, earth, oak, and cedar. The earthy notes quickly muscled their way to the front like a headliner on stage, while the oak and cocoa danced in and out of the spotlight like seasoned backup singers. Meanwhile, on the retro-hale, the cedar and oak teamed up to deliver a subtle but satisfying encore. Just as the first third settled in, a sneaky duo of natural tobacco and red pepper crept into the mix—lurking in the background but adding intrigue like plot twists in a good mystery novel. As the second third rolled in, the earthy and oaky characters stayed firmly in control, while cocoa, cedar, and that touch of sweet natural tobacco played their supporting roles beautifully. The red pepper didn’t shout, but it made sure you knew it was still hanging around, giving the flavor some spicy punctuation. In the final third, the story stayed largely the same—but with a small spike in peppery drama, like a finale with just enough fire to keep things exciting. Flavor-wise, the Byron delivered a smooth, medium-bodied ride, perfectly balanced by medium strength. No surprises here—just consistent, well-calibrated intensity from start to finish. The draw? Near perfect, with just enough resistance to keep you engaged. The burn, however, played hard to get—requiring more touch-ups than a diva before curtain call, and the ash was as perfect.
