The Blackened M81 Cigars by Drew Estate is the dream-come-to-life creation of three top-tier artisans from three very diverse fields who share an immense passion for cigars. James Hetfield, singer/songwriter/guitarist of the metal band Metallica, along with Rob Dietrich, master distiller and blender of Blackened Whiskey, and Johnathan Drew, cigar crafter and founder/president of Drew Estate, teamed up create this potent and flavor packed cigar. It took the trio two years to develop the blend, which they consider an expression of passion. The cigar is composed of a Mexican San Andres wrapper draped over a USA Connecticut Broadleaf binder and a filler composed of Nicaraguan and USA Pennsylvania leaves. This is one dark and flavorful cigar. As a nod to the band Metallica, the “M81” stands for Metallica and 1981, which is the year the band was formed. “Blackened” is the name of a song from the band’s “And Justice for All” album, which was released in 1988.

Despite many decades of war and revolution in this Central American country, the cigar industry has thrived due to the hard work and tenacity of Cuban exiles to the land such as Plasencia, Padron, Oliva, Ortez, and others. Tobacco has been a force of social stability, and the country is now one of the principal exporters of premium cigars in the world.

Maduro wrapper can go from dark coffee brown with a reddish tint to blackish brown (the latter also called Oscuro).

The wrapper is the last tobacco leaf to be rolled on the cigar, so it is the one the smoker will see.
Mexican tobacco is very dark and the best leaves can be used as maduro wrappers. San Andres Maduro is a thick, medium bodied dark leaf, also called San Andres Morron. Like Connecticut Broadleaf, San Andres Maduro is stalk cut and used for binder and wrapper.

The binder is a full tobacco leaf that is used to roll the cigar, binding the filler tobaccos together.
USA Connecticut Broadleaf tobacco is grown in the Connecticut River Valley area. The soil in this region is of glacial origins. The tobacco is dark, oily, flavorful, and aromatic. It is used primarily as a maduro wrapper, but it also serves as an excellent binder.

Was looking forward to smoking this stick after reading all of the good reviews. Unfortunately, it didn't live up to the hype. It's a pepper bomb, but other than that, the only way I can describe the taste is dark. I think the theme got in the way of making a good tasting cigar. One of my favorite combinations is broadleaf and san andreas, but this is not a good representation of it in my opinion.

This cigar took me by surprise. Being Metallica is my favorite band of all time, and I love Maduros, I was a little hesitant. I thought maybe it was a gimmick, but I was pleasantly wrong. The flavor on this is outstanding, and so is the aroma. The burn was a little weird at first, but after a second or third relight touch up, it burned really nice. The draw was medium and a touch tight, but it did not seem to inhibit the cigar very much. Delicious flavors of chocolate, mild coffee, roasted nuts, and some earth. Will definitely be buying more. Worth the price.

Great maduro price could be better considering this is a single fermented stick. Black pepper assaults you from light up and calms down a little from that but it’s present. The San andres wrapper steals the show with its rich oily aroma and flavor.

Bought 3. Aging 1. Going to smoke my last one with my sons on our Friday night smoke call. We smoke every Friday night and the same cigar. Tell what we are tasting and always we all pair with something different. Anyway, the 1 I have smoked was good. Not great but ok. Didn't dry box. But I will on Friday night. Expected better but maybe doing it the correct way, lol, might be different. No bad way to smoke a gar but the experience of my time with my bird's is always great. Good burn and ash and draw. Not a lot of flavor but smooth.

I was surprised at how much I liked this cigar. Looks good and burned well too. A bit of pepper in the first third but mellowed out as it got into the second third. Draw was a bit tight but nothing too bad. I would consider a box of this one rather than just a onesy, twosy type of thing.

Great small cigar. A big Metallica fan, so had to try it. The cigar burns well with a few spice notes. Definitely a spicy note at various times during the smoke. Definitely would purchase again. Paired well with whiskey.

Deep rich flavors, yet a creaminess on the back. Dark roasted coffee and earthiness came through the most. Would pair well with something rich and bitter sweet, raspberry cheesecake or the like.

I did as Christian K suggested below only I opted for the Black album instead. Both cigar and whiskey delivered. This smoke lasted me a full two hours with an excellent draw full of black pepper, earth, leather and dark chocolate and coffee. The burn required the occasional touch up but a worthwhile experience overall.

This is a more serious cigar, more body, and while not being over powering, it does have that pleasant conversation with your palate. Medium plus, notes that ring true for the more experienced smoker who like to play in the close to heavy end without being overcome with any harshness. If you enjoy dabbling near the full spectrum this is a must.

So! A heavy metal rock legend, a renowned whiskey distiller, and a premium cigar crafter walk into a bar and. This might sound like the start of an old joke, but trust me, the Blackened M81 Cigars by Drew Estate Corona is no joke. It is a potent smoke composed by James Hetfield of the metal band Metallica, Rob Dietrich of Blackened Whiskey, and Johnathan Drew of Drew Estate, three “rock stars” in their respective fields. The trio joined forces and created one kick-butt cigar. Named after Metallica’s song “Blackened,” this corona features a muscular, toothy Mexican San Andres wrapper, a Connecticut Broadleaf binder and a Nicaraguan and Pennsylvania filler. This is a dark cigar with a firm construction. Like a heart-pumping, hard rock song, the Blackened started off with a blast of spice underscored by a warm sweetness. The smoke was thick. It reminded me of a smokey dimly lit nightclub that books bands just before they make it big. Into the second set, the spice tapered down a bit, and the tobacco sweetness moved to the forefront. The retro hale was peppery, and the finish was long and tingly like a mesmerizing guitar solo. For the final set, deep earthy notes accompanied the sweetness and spice in a slow fade like the ending to a favorite rock ballad. Overall, this cigar is not a one-hit-wonder, and it should be part of your regular playlist. Pair it with a dark espresso, a dark ale, or a Blackened Whiskey.

While a lifelong Metallica fan, I found this cigar to be very Liga Privada. Like Drew Estate's Ligas, the Mexican San Andres wrapper was the predominant, if not sole, flavor. A good cigar. On a Met Fan scale, it is better than a St. Anger, but no Master of Puppets.

Let me disclose a potential bias here. I am a huge Metallica fan, and in general I like Drew Estate cigars. I am also relatively new into cigars. With that out of the way... In one word this cigar is balanced. It starts with no significant element being overpowering or very noticeable over others, quite smooth. It may feel a bit disappointing on the first draws for some. As it progresses, it reveal some nice salty cocoa flavors, quickly evolving to full body, spicey and dark roasted coffee notes. All very pronounced, but all well balanced. I usually smoke 3/4 of a cigar, but I made an exception for the M81. If you want the whole experience, pair it with their Blackened whiskey, put that old Metallica shirt and let "Orion" rip on the speakers.

I love this cigar, its is my new favorite. The toro sold out pretty quick so I bought x3 robusto and x2 corona. It was an awesome smoke right from the store, but I want to keep a couple in the humidor for a while. I really like them I would 100% buy a box if I could. Even though I didn’t want to get my hopes to high for this one but it definitely exceeded my expectations by far. Sorry I don’t know how to describe the cigar very well. The label is the weakest part of this cigar, and it’s not that weak. This a bold smoke and you can tell Drew Estate put love into making this cigar for a great band. I like full body smokes and I will be buying this again.
