Gilberto Oliva Reserve Blanc is a mild bodied stick that utilizes an Ecuadorian Connecticut shade wrapper on top of an Ecuadorian binder and Nicaraguan fillers.. This cigar honors Melanio Oliva's grandson, Gilberto Oliva Sr., who grew tobacco in several countries before settling in Nicaragua in the late 1960s. When it comes to premium Nicaraguan cigars, few brands have made as much of an impact on quality and consistency as Oliva. Their ability to create an exceptional (and award-winning) product time and time again has firmly cemented their place as one of the leaders in the Central American market. Cigar wrapper color varies from green (Double Claro or Candela) to black (Maduro or Oscuro) with a full range of browns in between.
Natural wrapper, also known as Colorado Claro, is light brown in color.

The wrapper is the last tobacco leaf to be rolled on the cigar, so it is the one the smoker will see.
Ecuador is the perfect place to grow wrappers, because it is located on the Equator! And it has rich soils too. The weather conditions, with a nearly permanent cloudy sky, provide a natural shade, protecting the wrapper plants from sunshine and allowing the tobacco to grow thin and light. This climate allows tobacco growers to grow Connecticut-seed wrapper in the shade without shade cloths, resulting in more economical wrapper.

The binder is a full tobacco leaf that is used to roll the cigar, binding the filler tobaccos together.
Ecuador is the perfect place to grow binders, because it is located on the Equator and it has rich soils too. The weather conditions, with a nearly permanent cloudy sky, provide a natural shade, protecting the plants from sunshine and allowing the tobacco to grow thin and light. Ecuador supplies Connecticut and Sumatra type binders to many cigar factory in the world.

This has some nice qualities. The flavors are very straightforward toasty nuts and mild charred wood. That isn't necessarily a bad thing, but it's a flavor set you get bored with before too long. There's a hidden bright coffee note lingering in there and I wouldn't be shocked to find out the binder is Sumatra seed. Good smoke output, but a very uneven burn. Aroma was non-existent, which was odd. I am super curious about the coffee hints I started getting. Mild- strength, mild+ body. Decent coffee pairing with a lighter or nuttier coffee. Good for the price point.

I chose this for a relaxing late Sunday morning with some espresso. The dry draw was pretty tight and the taste was kind of dull. When smoking with coffee, I take my time and it stayed lit for a decent time. The overall taste was mild and a bit creamy but nothing to crow about. It got about halfway down and then it started to tunnel. Tried to fix that but the construction on the latter half seemed unsalvageable. I don't have another one to compare it to but I won't be buying this one again.

This is a nice looking cigar. It burned pretty fast so I had to slow down how often I smoked it. Towards the end of the 2nd third and the whole last third I got really got the taste. Only thing I didn’t like was I thought the draw was a little tight but that could have just been this particular cigar.

After years of searching, I found Oliva. Usually I purchase the V, but decided to try the Gilberto. Another excellent decision. The only comment is the cigar is mild. Whilst not a criticism, I prefer the deeper texture of a maduro. For the price, you can't go wrong.
