The Illusione Epernay Serie 2009 was introduced in 2008 as a limited release for European Cigar Cult Journal. As it garnered high ratings it became a regular offering for the Illusione brand, created by Dion Giolito, a Nevada retailer. With its combination of Criollo and Corojo tobaccos, and a superior Cafe Rosado wrapper, the Epernay is floral, creamy and complex. This boutique cigar is made with all Nicaraguan tobaccos at the famous Raices Cubanas factory. The cigar has earned #3 on Cigar Aficionado's Best Cigars of 2011 listing.

Most cigars are manufactured in the Caribbean and Central America.
Honduras, a Central American country which shares a border with Nicaragua, is widely known in the premium cigar industry as the ideal place to grow Cuban and Connecticut seed tobaccos. Danli and the Jamastran Valley is considered the heart of Honduras’ cigar industry. The Jamastran Valley is known for producing a full-bodied tobacco that draws strong comparisons to the tobacco grown in the Pinar del Rio region of Cuba. This same region is also known for its Connecticut shade grown and Corojo shade grown tobacco. In addition, Honduras produces Cuban-seed sun grown filler tobaccos of the highest quality.

Lit up with a session without time constraints considering it's a large vitola. Visually it's a nice wrapper leaf with tight seams and minimal stems. The band is very subtle, glossy white and embossed gold. Crown cut. Flavors are hearty cedar, sweet cream, toasted almond and a salty pretzel finish. Burn got a little uneven. There's some nuances reminiscent of coffee cake in the first third. Second third needed a purge and touch-up, burn never really straightened it's act out. Draw was okay and flavors were more of the same. Right at the halfway mark a chewy caramel joined the mix. Final third, a lot of the flavors seem to fall off. Cereal grains and a bready finish take over. Burn needed help. Overall based on size, I don't see the time commitment being worth the experience to pick up again. Spent 2 hrs with it.

Lovely unique taste. Like taking a Cuban San Cristobol and making it lighter with some exotic spice floral notes. Paired well with coffee and medium peated whisky - Caol Ila 25. Tended to burn uneven, causing taste imbalance. Touch it up and it's back to wonderful!

I've had quite a few of these that have had problems with unraveling, it's an easy fix with a little cigar glue but slightly annoying. It is a very 'traditional' tasting cigar. I think it's meant to try to replicate some Cuban cigars and it actually does a decent job. Middle of the road medium body and strength, very balanced and pretty delicious. I highly recommend.

I’ve only had a few different Illusione cigars and they were all very good but this one was exceptional!! One of the best looking rolling jobs of any cigar I’ve seen. Packed very tight but the draw was perfect for me, open with a little resistance. I’d say med, med-full and very complex, I don’t usually say this but this is for sure a cigar that you’d be happy to buy by the box!

The construction of this cigar is impressive. While I was trying to get a looser draw with my perfect draw the top split (wrapper and binder) down to 3/4" very close to the band. I tried to light it up unsuccessfully ... bullocks! out of desperation I cut off down almost to the band and 1 inch of the foot. It didn't unravel and the inch I cut kept burning for another 10+ minutes (applause). The flavors were earth, nutty, hint of sweet vanilla, light leather and aged tobacco. This cigar has proven worthy of respect and a must try ??

The aroma is the only thing good about this stick has a vanilla like scent. Otherwise it’s absolutely filled to the brim with nothing but disgusting black pepper. This is one of the worst cigars I’ve ever had in my life. Using excessive pepper to fill a cigar is a lazy shortcut. Shameful.

A classical cigar, but in a dated grandfatherly way. Pre-light sensations: On the nose, the Illusione Epernay is remenicient of hay and faint silage. Soft and pliable, it has the familiar squaredness of a box-pressed cigar but only at the foot. I took issue with the color described on Neptune as Colorado Maduro. I found the fine wrapper a more Colorado Claro than anything else, if even a bit toward Claro. Illusione's own description is more in line with what I saw. The softness nearly came to trouble when it came time to cut. I nearly crushed the cap in before my plug cutter seated. The 46RG was a breeze to light with a slow matchstick method and burned evenly thoughout. The ash did not cling long or hard to this stick. I had a half-inch's worth fall into my lap in mid-conversation. A rare thing in my experience which I attributed to the soft construction. Not an overly strong cigar, so anyone looking for a heavyweight should inquire elsewhere. But while mild is certainly no sin, I thought the flavor was one-dimensional. Earthy, dry, and woody in a grandfather's tobacco sense. I didnt get any of the nutty/chocolate sweetness described by Illusione. The first smoke was against my usual backdrop of Crown Royal Reserve. For me, a cigar will usually bring out more of the sweetness in that drink. I was practically begging the Epernay to do so, but she did not yield. The bright spot for me was on the lips. A velvety, emoillient, feeling, no doubt a result of the shade-grown wrapper. The smoke that lingered seemed to stifle and bring the room down rather than liven it up. Can smoke go stale instantly? It seemed so to me. Overall I don't feel I agree with the magazine ratings on this one. I know mag ratings aren't everything. I tried real hard to like it and maybe this time my expectations got the better of me. But at 11 bucks a single and a 94 seal from CA could you blame me for expecting a little more? **Second stick*

This is the type of cigar I go to when I want a change of pace from dark flavored maduros. The Aganorsa tobacco used creates a unique taste that has some spice and a tangy note, sourdough being the most prominent. Highly recommend!

I had the Epernay about a year ago and it really did not blow me away. I recently had a chance to try it again and had a completely different experience. Both times I noticed that the construction was solid, appearance is nice, understated with only one simple band to let you know what you have in your hand. Flavors of cinnamon are very present with an earthy balance that really pulls it all together.

Excellent cigar. Great construction with a creamy smooth wrapper no veins firm not overly compacted and enjoyable smell. The burn was superb. I set the cigar down for two extended periods of time with out it going out. The evenness of the burn was razor sharp. The draw was excellent. Taste was woody and spicy on the tongue with a light dryness. The aroma was very pleasant with earthy and woody scents. The burn never gave up even smoking it to a small nub. Some pepper after the final third. The ash was solid and fell when I chose to tap the cigar. A pleasant medium strength. A great value, I will definitely buy again.

Fantastic aroma & taste. Great draw. Very unassuming looking stogie but really great. Definitely one of my top 5. One complaint might be that it's a bit of a fast burn if there is such a thing. Just wanted it to last a bit longer.

Starts with a smooth, yet strong pepper and leather flavor with something sweet. Gets stronger in the in the second half if you like spice with some espresso flavor, this is a good choice.

Great flavor. I tend to see some draw issues with these. Much more draw issues with the longer sticks though.

I have a quite a few of these in this length with very tight draws. If I had it to do over, I would've bought a box of shorter sticks. Usually if I'm going to spend one hour plus on a cigar, I would go for something a little nicer. They do have great flavor.

Maybe I got a bad one. I stored it correctly in my humidor for over 3 months after buying - but mine had extremely uneven burn issues that never corrected itself and the draw was so loose it was like sucking air through a straw. I had to manually try to correct the burn quite a few times, but it came right back. I had to re-light once. The flavor was nice and balanced - no pepper and no spice, so if you like mild this is great. But with the burn and draw issues, there are too many others in the price range.

By far one of my favorite sticks. Taste is superb and aroma is even better. One of my go to cigars for any occasion.

A well balanced cigar for those that aren't into spicy or strong flavor. In my opinion this cigar should have tied with the La Aroma in Cigar Aficianado's Top 25 2011 but both are great and are both currently in my humidor.
