A medium-strength cigar, the Joya Silver by Joya de Nicaragua expertly unites a dark Ecuadorian Habano wrapper, a Mexican San Andrés binder with Nicaraguan fillers to create a special fiftieth anniversary edition worthy of a cigar aficionado’s humidor.

Ecuadorian Habano wrapper has become one of the most used cigar wrappers in the market. Grown primarily by the Oliva family, this tobacco originated from Habano or H2000 seeds brought to Ecuador from Cuba. This leaf is rich and flavorful thanks to the temperate climate of Ecuador and the quality of its volcanic soil.

The binder is a full tobacco leaf that is used to roll the cigar, binding the filler tobaccos together.
Mexican tobacco is primarily grown in the San Andres region due to its volcanic soil. It has a very distinctive flavor with a spicy and earthy profile. As a binder it adds to the cigar’s overall flavor.

Once again i read about a cigar at Cigar Aficionado rated about 90 and decided to order it. Again the only place I could find to order it was at Neptune Cigar. They have the widest selection of hard to find cigars I have ever seen on the web. The Joya Silver is rated a 4 and starts out rough, but mellows into a medium to full cigar with a lot of flavor and richness. Similar to a 1950s Cuban cigar. It was very enjoyable with a Old Fashion I was drinking at the time. I would buy again. Would stand up to any whiskey drink and I can not wait to try it with other non whiskey drinks as well. Worth buying the box just to try it.

So! I tend to shy away from limited-edition or anniversary sticks. Why? The price point is one reason. But! When I noticed the Joya Silver Toro, I just had to try it. Released as part of Joya de Nicaragua’s 50 year anniversary celebration, the Silver is available at a very appealing price point. Its dark, cafe au lait Ecuadorian Habano wrapper is adorned with a simple yet elegant band. From foot to head, the wrapper had a rustic appearance. A gentle squeeze exposed a little hardness in the middle. The first few puffs revealed woody and grassy notes and a subtle sweetness. The draw was slightly hard, so I massaged its center, which helped loosen it. At the mid-point, I noticed a barnyard aroma along with tobacco sweetness. Towards the end, notes of spice appeared, but the sweetness stayed strong. Strength was middle with a tilt to full. Overall, this was an enjoyable cigar that’s ideal for special occasions as well as an everyday stick.

Based on the cigar's appearance, smell and dry draw I expected a much more than I experienced. The draw as just ok, looser than I prefer, had to make 2 relights and 3 touch ups on the burn (and it wasn't even a windy night). The taste was mild in my opinion and very one note. I'll try again to see if maybe it was a bad stick and update my review based on the next experience.

Not for me. Good draw and burn, some nice tobacco notes, but overall it tasted like a wet, earthy cigarette.
