Crowned Heads La Imperiosa is made at the My Father Cigar factory in Nicaragua with a 100% blend of Nicaraguan binder and filler tobaccos and a dark Ecuador Habano Oscuro wrapper. The blend was first released as a limited edition "Las Calaveras" in 2014, and it was so popular that it became "imperative" for Crowned Heads to release it as a regular production brand. This full bodied cigar has been referred to by its makers as a "tour de force".

Despite many decades of war and revolution in this Central American country, the cigar industry has thrived due to the hard work and tenacity of Cuban exiles to the land such as Plasencia, Padron, Oliva, Ortez, and others. Tobacco has been a force of social stability, and the country is now one of the principal exporters of premium cigars in the world.

Cigar wrapper color varies from green (Double Claro or Candela) to black (Maduro or Oscuro) with a full range of browns in between.
Maduro wrapper can go from dark coffee brown with a reddish tint to blackish brown (the latter also called Oscuro).

The wrapper is the last tobacco leaf to be rolled on the cigar, so it is the one the smoker will see.
Ecuadorian Habano wrapper has become one of the most used cigar wrappers in the market. Grown primarily by the Oliva family, this tobacco originated from Habano or H2000 seeds brought to Ecuador from Cuba. This leaf is rich and flavorful thanks to the temperate climate of Ecuador and the quality of its volcanic soil.

Nicaragua
The binder is a full tobacco leaf that is used to roll the cigar, binding the filler tobaccos together.
Nicaraguan cigar binders are produced mainly in Esteli and Jalapa, both lands with volcanic soil and excellent climate for growing tobacco. Binders grown in Jalapa have sweet undertones. Corojo, Habana2000, Criollo, and Maduro binders are all produced in Nicaragua.

This is my “old faithful” cigar. I always have a box. There’s always one in my cigar caddy. Dark and semi sweet chocolate build in the first third with dusty oak, leather, and just a touch of pepper throughout. Not transitional, but it’s consistent and tasty and you know what you’re getting every time. Love it.

This has a medium to dark brown wrapper, a little tooth, a little fuzz, a few veins. Pack is firm throughout. Triple cap, simple band. The cut and smells of yeast malt and light cocoa. This is off to a good start in the first few puffs. The flavors are hearty - dried fruits, heavy bread, and some savory content. I wouldn't call it meaty yet but there's something else in here that's significant. That something else might be baked apple like an apple tart. So far the ash is holding nice and tight an inch and a half to date. Smoke output is minimal but the draw is good. Construction on this stick appears to be top-notch. 1st 3rd flavors are dark dried fruits very raisiny no spice to speak of maybe a hint of cinnamon like spice. Moving into the second third flavors have stabilized. They were a little peaky early but now have calmed down. Flavor is well into the medium and lasts all the way to the next puff so has good body. The flavor is soft but stout, reminds me of pumpernickel bread. At halfway this cigar has taken an odd turn for the mild. Typically cigars get a little stronger as they go. At this point it tasted like bread crust. Nice flavor but not as interesting as when it started. I suspect there will be changes to come. The ash is routinely holding an inch and a half at least at a time. It has a very nice ring burn pattern and the the burn line is just about perfect. Construction and burn performance remain top notch. Entering the final third the blenders art reveals itself. The midterm lull is a setup for new flavors coming in - decidedly savory a little spicier now. There is an herbal note creeping in although there's been a touch of plastic but that seems to have passed. Down to the last couple of inches and I'm picking up a hint of ammonia which is disconcerting. Fortunately the ammonia was short-lived. Overall though this is been a good cigar and I wouldn't mind trying another. Smoke time is good for an hour and a half.

Very dark wrapper, few veins visible. Cold draw: Cocoa, sweet natural tobacco and earth. 1/3: Earth, slight sweetness, spice, raisins, savory meat, cream, fruitiness and pepper. Very smooth. 2/3: Dark chocolate, coffee, cream, malts, caramel and some generic sweetness. 3/3: Cream, chocolate, cherry, malts, coffee and sweet roasted nuts. The burn on this was absolutely razor sharp. One of the best ashes, held on for half the stick! Construction was spot on, draw was perfect with just the right amount of resistance. This stick poured out chewy and thick smoke. Extremely slow burn, final smoke time was just under 1.5 hours. I thoroughly enjoyed this cigar. I will be smoking another for sure and potentially looking at a box purchase. It’s a must try!!

This cigar is chock full of a deep, hearty, flavor as dark as the wrapper. Wood, bittersweet chocolate, cocoa, coffee, and black pepper all coalesce into one rich, dark, intoxicating profile that's almost indicative of my favorite Padron. The La Imperiosa is a little less refined, smooth, and mellow, but stands out for being just as rich and almost raw, unfiltered, all-natural.

Another home run from crown head. Compared to the smaller size (slightly larger ring gauge - magicos) this is slightly bolder in flavors and has more transitions with the same complexity. Smokers who like full flavors and medium strength would prefer this size. Also this is the one I would choose if I was drinking any hard liquor ... earth, leather, dark espresso, bitter cocoa with a periodic black pepper and a slight hint of mint that comes up and fades quickly around the second third. Definitely not a boring cigar. A must try.

This came out after the inaugural release of the Las Calaveras cigar, due to overwhelming demand. Although it might not be as good as the original, they're close enough (and more affordable) to easily warrant picking them up! Full bodied, bold taste. Lots of creamy smoke to enjoy. Nice even burn, very even draw. Not much change in taste through the life of the stick. Very enjoyable.

After letting this cigar sit in my Humidor for a couple weeks I smoked it Thursday night on my Birthday. It was awesome, very smooth and favorable. Smoked easy, good ash, a mostly tight ash line and easy to draw.

To kick this review off, I'd like to start by saying that this cigar, aesthetically, is nothing short of perfect. A dark, oily, chocolaty wrapper with a perfect ratio of wrapper/filler/binder. The corona size has to be my all-time favorite. Now onto the smoke. Upon lighting, the draw is smooth with just the right amount of drag. A few puffs in and the journey begins. Full bodied flavor with notes of pepper and oak paired with subtle notes of coffee and earth. Once approaching the halfway point of the cigar, the oak notes open up along with the hints of coffee, slightly mellowing the pepper flavor but in no way losing any strength. These flavors remain prominent through to the end of the smoke. By the end of the smoke, the ash is a solid, layered, white ash that symbolizes the effort and care put into the rolling of this cigar. All-in-all, an excellent successor to the Las Calaveras line from Crowned Heads. Full bodied, peppery, powerful. Enjoy at the end of a long, stressful day with a cold, sweet beverage of your choice. 9/10
