The second of EP Carrillo’s 2014 new cigar releases, La Historia is born from an inspiration of the Carillo’s family history as cigar makers. This superior box pressed cigar has a chocolate colored Mexican San Andres wrapper, an Ecuadorean Sumatra binder and filler from Nicaragua. EP Carrillo La Historia is medium to full bodied with hints of dark chocolate, leather, black pepper and coffee, and a creamy long finish.

Most cigars are manufactured in the Caribbean and Central America.
The Dominican Republic is the world's first producer of cigars. Most factories are located in Santiago, in the center of the island, and in close proximity to the tobacco fields grown in the fertile Cibao Valley. While tobacco and cigars have always traditionally been produced in the Dominican Republic, many Cuban cigar makers established in the Dominican Republic after the Cuban communist revolution, elevating the quality of Dominican cigars.

Mexican tobacco is very dark and the best leaves can be used as maduro wrappers. San Andres Maduro is a thick, medium bodied dark leaf, also called San Andres Morron. Like Connecticut Broadleaf, San Andres Maduro is stalk cut and used for binder and wrapper.

The binder is a full tobacco leaf that is used to roll the cigar, binding the filler tobaccos together.
Ecuador Sumatra tobacco is made from Sumatra-seeds that been cultivated in Ecuador, one of the most ideal locations for growing tobacco. The leaves tend to be dark and rich in flavor.

Filler is the term used to describe the tobacco inside a cigar or the "guts" of the cigar.
Filler (or “tripa” in Spanish) is the term used to describe the tobacco inside a cigar or the "guts" of the cigar. The Dominican Republic is considered one of the most premier tobacco growing countries in the world. The filler tobacco grown in this Caribbean island nation ranges from mild to full bodied. Olor Dominicano and Piloto Cubano are the main types of tobacco grown in the Dominican Republic.

Looks alone, this is a beautiful stick. Teal satin footband, and dual main bands with an aesthetically pleasing colorway adorn a smooth and even deep mahogany wrapper leaf - 5 stars! Cold aroma is sweet molasses, rich soil, and figs. Flavor profile in the first third feels antique. The cold draw springs to life with a dash of caramel sweetness, copious baking spices and a hammock of dense bread. The burnline is picturesque and crispy! Second third I'm loving this stick, getting loads of medium roasted coffee, rich leather, spicy clove and dusty oak. The burn continues to be astounding and the draw is a joy. Final third is dry cocoa, brazil nut, baking spices, and dark espresso. Burn was impeccable till the very end. Spent a very enjoyable 110 minutes with it. Highly recommend!

Cigar came wrapped very loose with the cap unraveling and unraveling at the foot. Draw and burn were fantastic. Aroma was delicious. Taste was cream, dry earthy with a dense feel left over on the palate and surprisingly mild on the pepper. Barely any.

At first uneven burn but straightened out quickly. Perfect burn after that with excellent ash. Draw was nice and was easy being box pressed. Just right and easy draw with great volume. Flavor was very enjoyable. One of my top 3 favorite EPC cigars. IMO the carrillos have a nice easy draw on box press due to a little less filler. Which is fine and does not affect burn time. One thing to note for those finding a hard draw, the EPC pressed seem to perform best in the 63-65% RH range. You get up around 70 or more and the draw is negatively affected as is the burn. Enjoy!!!

An extremely earthy and smoky cigar. If you are a fan of sticks with strong mineral and hickory style flavors this should be added to your list to try. While it’s not exactly my preferred profile I definitely appreciated the layers of mineral, smoke, and hints of spice.

All three fantastic cigars. The Pledge tends to catch a bad rap as "Over-Rated", but that has not been my experience. The best thing is to allow it to sit in humidor for a little while. I don't like lanceros but this one hit all the right notes in a nice hour and a half episode. Excellent draw, bold but manageable flavors. I liked the cocoa, coffee, medium pepper. Nicotine kick was towards the last inch. Probably not the best choice for a first cigar, but great for an experienced smoker curious about lanceros.

In 2021, the EP Carrillo La Historia Parientes was awarded the number one Dominican Republic cigar of the year by “Cigar Lover Magazine.” And I can see why. This long, lean, box-pressed Lonsdale hit all the right buttons for me. It had strength, balance, complexity, and ease of smoking. Its savory, dark Mexican San Andres maduro wrapper had an imposing muscular look that telegraphed its potency. Construction wise it had a little play. The aroma off the body was grassy. The draw was smooth and effortless. Once lit, I picked up strong and imposing notes of spice and pepper, which did not let up. For a long cigar, it had no burn issues, nor did it go out. The smoke was wispy. The ash had a nice salt and pepper look to it. For the second part, the spice stayed strong, but subtle notes of earth and tobacco sweetness made their presence known. Into the final chapter of this family-themed cigar, the faint notes of coffee and coca appeared and helped mute the spice a bit. The cigar’s strength is listed as full, but it creeps up on you. It starts medium and slowly works its way-up to full. While it does pack a punch, its potency does not get in the way of its flavor profile and enjoyment. Overall, I recommend the EP Carrillo La Historia Parientes to aficionados who like a strong, balanced smoke. Pair it with a black American coffee to heighten the cigar’s boldness.

I am not an expert so here goes. Cigars arrived in perfect condition and well packaged. I am no good at notes. The El Senador is "peppery" all the way down. Flavour never turned bitter even at the end which is a massive plus. Very satisfying as I only received these on January 18,smoked on 24 January so just short of a week with the Bovedas. Worth every penny (cent) and much cheaper than in the UK. You Americans should cherish what you have. These New World cigars are just as good as Cubans. Thank you Neptune from a grateful English customer.

What a beautiful cigar to relax with after a meal. Burn line was a little wonky to start with but leveled out on it's own. No touch-ups needed - burned perfectly all the way to the end. The aroma was a little bothersome for my wife as we sat and enjoyed each others company in a cigar lounge. But definitely a must try. Recommend pairing with a nice sipping rum - I had an Appleton Estate Rare Blend 12yo to go with it.

Very nice looking cigar, well adorned with 3 bands, minimal veins with visible seems. Solid stick that draws extremely well. Nice cocoa with some light pepper. Burns well, slowly, producing a good amount of medium bodied smoke and grey ash, that holds a bit over an inch. After a long day, this cigar is just what I needed. Strong nicotine content, yet Smooth, tasty, perfectly balanced profile.

I’ve burnt through all the sizes and enjoy this stick as much as the Carrillo’s Pledge. Appearance is rough but normal for this outer leaf. Flavors of earth, blackberry, oak, and a touch of hay are prevalent. Some burn issues caused a minor touch up but not an overriding issue. The Carrillo family’s accomplishments are legendary... this cigar carved their niche. She’s a powerhouse... great!

One of my favorite cigars that is a consistent pleasure and reward. All the evils have summed this beauty up well.. it is a great full flavored cigar! I have smoked at least 100 of these lovely cigars since 2018, some have been less tightly rolled and smoked more rapidly. La Historia is a solid 92-93 cigar and one I am never without. The Carrillos’ do it right as purely evidenced by this cigar, the Encore, and Pledge! Bravo!

Gradually, the wealth of sensations expands. The taste of cocoa settles on the tongue. Fresh mint appears in the aroma, pleasant for a cigar of such a strength. However, it is balanced by light sweetness. And the harmony of tastes is maintained in its perfect condition. After the middle of the cigar, the aromas become heavier and tart. Sometimes there appear those for whom it is not possible to choose a suitable name, although it seems that it itself revolves in the language. The aromas of leather and sandalwood grow stronger, and the balance of pepper and vanilla plays on the tongue.

Not what I had hoped. The draw was too loose.The smoke output was awesome. Burn was very uneven. Taste was quite transitionless, except at the end, the strength kicked and I tasted a lot of dark licorice. And the wrapper cracked at the end too.

Pre light: Chocolate, leather and wood. 1/3: Earth, spice, mild pepper. Immediately starts out with a bad burn. Looks like there was a hollow spot near the foot. Requires a touch up. 2/3: Near the hour mark the burn finally straightens out. Not much going on with flavors. Some wood and nuttiness. 3/3: Cedar and more nuttiness. Flavors on this stick were very mediocre. That, mixed with the poor construction on this stick and it’s an easy pass. Final smoke time was just shy of 1.5 hrs. I won’t be smoking another one.

Not surprisingly, this reminds of some of the best La Gloria offerings from back in the day. The cigar is beautiful in every way. The smoke gives that backbone of wood that defined all the older La Glorias. The nuances attach to that skeletal structure much as muscle and tissue do in the human body. This cigar is well deserving of its high rating. I give it a 93.

I had this stick sitting in my humidor for a few months and I figured it was about to to light it up. I have to say I was very impressed with the presentation and construction of this cigar, before lighting I got the impression I was definitely in store for something rather special. The cigar itself gives off a very potent aroma before lighting almost coffee like. The first couple of minutes of the cigar starts off spicy but changes soon after and the spicy flavors subside. I really tasted a lot as the cigar progressed, flavors like dark cocoa and tiramisu also became apparent throughout the middle. Towards the end the strength picked up again into the medium-full zone. This stick is very unique from a flavor profile point of view and I recommend it if you are looking for something that really changes taste throughout the smoke.

As most know this had an awesome rating and I believe was Cigar aficionado No# 2 cigar of the year in 2014. I’ve been mostly giving raving reviews and in fact rarely review anything in a negative fashion. With that said, the first one of these I smoked was within a few days of me getting it and although it wasn’t bad, it wasn’t awesome. Fast forward a month and I tried another (bought a 5-pk) and man what a difference. It was a lot smoother and more flavorful & in fact near the end got quite intense. I have 3 more, looking forward to another go!

For medium to full bodied cigar lovers this stick gets it done. Have to say more of a nicaraguan fan but this a Dominican is outstanding. Flavors of wood,earth, coffee,and bit of anise is just great. Burn is excellent along with the ash and smoke volume. I now have a little over thirty of these in the humidor and it won't be long before ordering another box.

I'm sold on everything but the taste. It's not bad, it just doesn't seem to go anywhere. Very smooth, but it never really transforms into greatness. Just a very solid cigar. Would I recommend? Sure, but there are far more interesting tasting cigars out there.

This has become my favorite cigar. I wish I could say something, anything bad about it....but I can't. The construction, draw and burn are flawless. The flavors are just perfection. The combination of Sumatra binder and the San Andreas wrapper truly creates a unique flavor. If you love full flavor cigars, this is for you. Tons of flavor and tons of smoke. Easy draw and razor sharp burn. I buy them by the box on a regular basis....I could literally build a fort with the empty boxes!

The first thing I noticed about this cigar was the presentation...beautiful box...beautiful cigar. The dark brown San Andreas Maduro wrapper presents a nice contrast to the colorful bands and aqua blue foot band. The cigar is well rolled and possesses no soft spots. Upon lighting, I was greeted with an excellent draw and a nice blast of smoke filled with chocolate, caramel and black pepper flavors. The same flavors dominated the stick pretty much from start to finish, along with sort of a fruit / jammy taste that seemed to come and go. The smoke was dryer than I expected, but the stick produced a lot of it, which I like. The ash was light gray, almost white, and provided a nice contrast to the dark wrapper. The burn stayed pretty even throughout the smoke...the few issues that surfaced corrected themselves without assistance from my torch. All in all, I like this cigar. Another hit from E.P. Carrillo that you should definitely sample... perhaps along with a glass of good scotch or bourbon. Cheers!
