H. Upmann unwittingly invented the humidification system for cigars. Upmann, a German banker turned world-renowned cigar maker, would send Cuban cigars in wooden boxes as gifts. The boxes were lined in cedar to help keep the cigars humid and maintain their taste as they journeyed from Cuba to Europe. Of course, methods of keeping cigars properly humidified have come a long way since the 1800s. You can now purchase humidors with built-in hygrometers and humidifiers to help keep your sticks fresh.
