One way cigar crafters ensure their tobacco maintains its consistency is to smoke it before the tobacco is purchased and as it goes through the production process. Why? In terms of taste and aroma, as the smoke travels through your mouth and nose “... is how it really speaks to you,” according to Eduardo Fernandez, founder of Aganorsa Leaf. This is done by smoking a fumas. A fumas is a crudely rolled cigar made using one or two leaves from the same bale which will be used in the blend. From when the tobacco arrives at the factory, as it goes through the fermentation process, and when it is ready to be rolled into a cigar, fumas are smoked to make sure that the taste and aroma is consistent with the smoking experience they are trying to create. Aganorsa Leaf, one of Nicaragua’s top producers of tobacco and premium cigars, uses fumas during each step of the production process. But you don’t have to smoke a fumas to sample their fine tobacco, all you have to do is click
